I know this is a little late since you've already written a new post, but I too know a handful of people who are REALLY good at what they do but don't necessarily work their hardest, strive to increase their skills, or share what they know with others. Those are people I would call talented or gifted...but not experts. I knew a few people in college like that as well. They would party every night, never study, and skip or come late to class. Somehow though they'd ace every test and come up with great ideas on projects. ...those are the people who fake blink elements using javascript :) j/k

I think all the other answers given here are pretty subjective, and discount a good few people I’d put in the category.

Barney, I see your point. But, how would you call those people who meet criteria listed above? The Real Experts?

Or the expert should be always described as “Expert in the field of [anything], plus a great person for any project or task”?

There has to be a single word for Super Experts.

How about people who excel in their given field?

It helps to remember the obvious sometimes. I think all the other answers given here are pretty subjective, and discount a good few people I'd put in the category.

people who have relevant experience
people who can communicate what they have learned
people who look past the most convenient answer
people who aren't afraid of failure
people who don't give up

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."
