Let\u2019s make one thing straight right now – this article has nothing to do with the fact that more and more girls and guys are contacting us<\/a> and ask for a job<\/strong>. Really! However, if you\u2019re the one looking for a position, maybe these few tips would help.<\/p>\n

The scenario is always pretty much the same – you are sending an e-mail to jobs@somecompany.com. Let\u2019s see what would I look for if I\u2019m the one who\u2019s hiring…<\/p>\n

All positions<\/h3>\n

CV is a must. Short, but sweet. It should tell me anything I might be interested in, but only the relevant stuff. Give me the facts, not the story:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Name and contact details are mandatory, the rest of your personal information should be reduced to a minimum.<\/li>\n
  • Education – including all relevant courses, seminars, books read (very desirable) etc. I don\u2019t digg formal education when it comes to a new media.<\/li>\n
  • Experience – provide links, even from the early work – I\u2019d like to see your professional development.<\/li>\n
  • An impressive fact – employers like pleasant surprises. The most surprising application usually wins. If you\u2019re a designer, show me your single best project. If you\u2019re a developer, tell me about the concept you never had a chance to use in practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Check your spelling. There\u2019s no second chance.<\/p>\n

    The CV should be well designed. I\u2019m not saying that you should have your personal logo or anything, but the typography should be well though and it should reflect you as a person and show me that you clearly understand what you are applying for. You are going to work in web design industry, so I have to be sure you understand the media and its priorities.<\/p>\n

    PDF is always more professional, than MSWord document. Don\u2019t send both.<\/p>\n

    Don\u2019t push it within the e-mail message text. Something like…<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019d love to work for your company. In case you are looking for some young guns, I attached my CV.<\/p>\n

    You have to know about the web standards and their importance. You don\u2019t have to be a guru already, but you should show me a strong desire to become one some day.<\/p>\n

    Last, but, by any means, not least – getting along with your co-workers is the most valuable trait you can possibly have.<\/p>\n

    Designer\/illustrator<\/h3>\n

    Designers are usually the first ones when it comes to actual project production. However, as a designer, you have to understand other people\u2019s responsibilities and the problems they are facing (i.e. difficulty to slice PSD file into a well structured HTML\/CSS document). You might be the queen, but a good queen always appreciate her knights.<\/p>\n

    Understanding of the technological limitations on the web is the most crucial.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019ve got bags of talent, and you are also familiar with web standards – you\u2019re most probably in.<\/p>\n

    Client-side developer<\/h3>\n

    You have to understand the importance of visual details – every layout can<\/em> be done. One way or another. As a comfort, at least you\u2019ll have a chance to push the limits by creating a new techniques. And I know<\/em> you are highly motivated.<\/p>\n

    Accessibility understanding is a must and the applicant has to convince me that a visitor is really, and I mean really<\/em>, in the first place.<\/p>\n

    Server-side developer<\/h3>\n

    Besides unmatched programming skills, you have to understand the usability and the HTML specs. You\u2019ll be the one who will deliver content from a database into web standards compliant HTML documents.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019re going to show me a great web application you\u2019ve made, I\u2019d be probably looking for:<\/p>\n

    • simplicity<\/li>\n
    • clean, well commented and well structured code<\/li>\n
    • clear and understandable application interaction<\/li>\n
